We had what we thought would be our final say on the abomination that was Maryland’s uniform of choice -- the helmets in particular -- for their opener against Miami Monday night. We were wrong.
As pointed out by the Baltimore Sun, there are striking similarities between the helmets worn by the Terrapins last night and the helmets worn by... wait for it... the Charm City Roller Girls’ All-Stars team. According to the team’s captain Hillary Rosensteel -- whose roller nickname is “Rosie the Rioter”, incidentally -- the helmets are “not identical, but they’re shockingly similar.”
The design for the roller derby team’s’ helmets -- which like the Terps incorporates Maryland’s state flag -- was created by the husband of one of the members of the team and has been in use for three years. Below is a photo of both. You be the judge:
Suffice to say, there’s a slight bit of similarity between the two helmet designs. And Rosie the Rioter doesn’t appear to be the least bit happy about it.
“I can only guess where it came from,” she said.
For now, she said, “It’s just a coincidence. But I should not say anymore right now.”No one connected to the roller derby team would say whether or not legal action would be pursued. We have attempted to reach out to Under Armour, Maryland’s official uniform supplier, for comment to no avail.
