Badgers lose starting CB indefinitely

The bad news that was somewhat overshadowed by Wisconsin’s 35-0 stroll over an injury-raided, quarterback-searching Oregon State was the injury to Badgers senior cornerback Devin Smith.

Smith, a preseason second-team all Big Ten candidate (Phil Steele), suffered an unspecified foot injury early in the game against the Beavers and did not return to the game. He was seen on crutches for the rest of the afternoon.

According to coach Bret Bielema by way of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, X-rays on Smith’s foot revealed no broken bones, but didn’t exactly instill any confidence that he would be back any time soon.

UW defensive coordinator Chris Ash added that Smith would miss this week’s practice and game against Northern Illinois. Junior Marcus Cromartie will start in Smith’s place.
