Garrett Gilbert officially drops down UT QB pecking order

Well, that didn’t take long.

Although, for many Texas fans, it probably took far too long.

After being benched following a 2-0f-8, two interception performance against BYU, Longhorns quarterback Garrett Gilbert has officially been named the No. 3 quarterback heading into practice this week behind sophomore Case McCoy and freshman David Ash. Both McCoy and Ash, who have been listed as co-starters for Week 3’s game against UCLA, saw time in Texas’ 17-16 come-from-behind win over the Cougars.

“We will analyze the game and everybody’s [performance],” said UT offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin after the victory. “It is never as good as you think and never as bad as you think.

Yeah, but it was pretty bad for the former starter, and after throwing 17 interceptions last season, Gilbert wasn’t going to be given the benefit of the doubt any longer.

“He’s the starting quarterback. If he moves the ball and scores, he’ll keep it,” coach Mack Brown said of Gilbert before the season.

Against BYU, Gilbert did neither in addition to his two picks. That’ll merit you an instant demotion just about anywhere.
