Yikes: FSU’s Thompson has broken back

As we recapped yesterday, things have gone downhill and in a hurry for Florida State. The preseason top 5 Seminoles have now lost three in a row to land at a 2-3 start and have yet to win an ACC game. Quarterback EJ Manuel has dealt with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder and FSU’s offensive production has, indeed, dipped with Manuel on the sidelines.

How much it will be affected with the latest injury news remains to be seen.

During yesterday’s 35-30 loss to 4-1 Wake Forest (what?????), ‘Noles running back Chris Thompson suffered what has been described as compression fractures of his T-5 and T-6 vertebrae.

“He’s going to be staying here for further evaluations for a day or two so they can stabilize it and see how we’re going to move him and what we’re going to do,” coach Jimbo Fisher said. “But … he broke his back.”

The latest news is that Thompson remained in a local hospital through Saturday night and he is not expected to return to Tallahassee until Monday at the earliest. The injury is not related to a back injury Thompson suffered last season.

On the year, Thompson was the leading rusher for FSU with 28 carries for 81 yards and a score and, no, that’s not a typo; FSU has had little to no success running the ball this season.
