Army, Air Force ditch ’12 game at Yankee Stadium

Announced in 2009, Army was scheduled to face Rutgers (2011), Air Force (2012) and Boston College (2014) in a trio of games at new Yankee Stadium. The key word there. of course, is was.

In a press release, Army announced that their 2012 game against the Falcons in the Bronx has been scrapped and will instead be played at West Point’s Michie Stadium.

The reason given for the decision to ditch Yankee Stadium? “Concerns regarding a potential scheduling conflict with the 2012 Major League Baseball postseason led to the move,” the release stated.

“This change to our 2012 schedule will provide our fan base with a tremendous slate of games at Michie Stadium next year,” Army athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a statement. “With the strong possibility of a conflict with the Yankees’ postseason schedule, we felt it was in everyone’s best interests to return the game to West Point at this time. While we are excited about our continuing series at Yankee Stadium, our fans look forward to welcoming Air Force to Michie Stadium every other year. We are excited about working with our friends at the Yankees to host our game against Rutgers there next month and about continuing our series of games there in 2014.”

There’s no word on whether Army will look to add future games at the MLB park that would include their academy brethren.
