Even though Texas A&M will be in the SEC next season, Texas still plans to play on Thanksgiving, likely against another Big 12 opponent.
As JT touched on earlier, interim Big 12 commissioner Chuck Neinas laid out what the landscape of the conference would look like in 2012, which at this point in time appears to be a 10-team league that includes Missouri; whether that’s in the plans of Missouri chancellor Brady Deaton and the SEC is another story, but we won’t go there right now.
As to which of those remaining teams would play Texas on Thanksgiving, it appears Texas Tech is getting the early whispers, and a school official told the Austin-American Statesman the Red Raiders would love the opportunity.
“We hope (it will be Texas Tech),” the official said.
And why wouldn’t they? It’s another opportunity to play on national television on a day when the two schools would occupy a time slot on a major network.
On the opposite end of the likelihood spectrum, however, is the Big 12’s newest member, TCU.
“In all likelihood, that will not be the case,” Neinas said of TCU as UT’s Thanksgiving opponent. “There’s nothing definite there.”
Scheduling for 2012 season is currently being examined. Neinas added that no specific timetable has been given to Missouri about when they need to notify the conference of the school’s intentions, but a deadline has been set for the end of the 2011-12 academic school year.
