Texas, Texas Tech likely to play on Thanksgiving next year

It looks like Texas Tech will get their wish, after all.

With Texas A&M moving on to the SEC, Texas -- since they don’t have any room on their non-conference slate until 2018 -- was looking for a new opponent to fill their traditional Thanksgiving Day game for next year, a matchup to which the Red Raiders voluntarily raised their hands early last month.

We hope (it will be Texas Tech),” a TTU official told the Austin-American Statesman.

That official doesn’t have to hope anymore -- reportedly. Chip Brown of Orangebloods.com reports that Texas Tech will be the replacement for A&M’s slot next season. With the addition of West Virginia to the Big 12 next season (maybe; hopefully?), the conference would stay at 10 members (we’re still assuming Mizzou is going to join the SEC... eventually... right?), and while that may mean some shuffling to conference schedules, the Thanksgiving game would still be a go.

The two teams have played 60 times since 1928. UT holds the lead in the series 45-15.
