Despite a resounding thumping-in-progress over Texas A&M Saturday, Oklahoma may have suffered one of its worst losses of the season.
Following a third-quarter reception, Ryan Broyles went down with what appeared to be a very serious knee injury. Broyles was seen with tears running down his face on the sidelines before being taken to the locker room for further examination.
It’s unknown at this time how extensive the damage is or how much time, if any, the All-American wide receiver may miss as OU has yet to comment on the injury. Based on how the Sooners reacted in the minutes following the injury, however, it doesn’t look good.
Entering today’s game with the Aggies, Broyles led the country in receiving yards per game (133.8) and was second in receptions per game (10.1).
UPDATED 7:59 p.m. ET: Unfortunately for all involved, the injury to Broyles was indeed as serious as it first looked.
OU announced shortly after the No. 7 Sooners’ win over the Aggies that Broyles suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. As this is his final season of eligibility, and he would not be eligible for a medical redshirt, this also marks the end of Broyles’ outstanding collegiate career.
Broyles finishes the season with 83 receptions for 1,157 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Three weeks ago, Broyles set the NCAA record for career catches, breaking the old mark of 316 previously held by Purdue’s Taylor Stubblefield (no relation). Broyles finishes his career with 349 receptions for 4,586 yards and 45 touchdowns.
Broyles season-ending injury is the latest blow to the Sooners’ offense; last weekend, OU’s leading rusher, Dominique Whaley, was lost for the remainder of the year to a fractured ankle.
