Sandusky, Schultz continue to draw pensions

And, based on the number of emails from readers we’ve received on the subject, the ire of many Penn State fans as well.

The Patriot-News reported Saturday that Jerry Sandusky has and will likely continue to draw from a substantial pension offered by the university. Sandusky, for the three or four of you who are unaware, is the former Nittany Lions defensive coordinator who was charged last week with 40 counts of sexually abusing children, including at least one incident that occurred on campus.

Despite the multiple felony counts he’s facing, Sandusky will still receive nearly $60,000 annually from the State Employees’ Retirement System. Sandusky, who remains free on a $100,000 bond, has been paid monthly through the system since his retirement in 1999.

The state’s investigation into Sandusky’s alleged sexual abuse of children began in 2009.

Additionally, the paper reports that former school vice president Gary Schultz will continue to receive his pension as well. Schultz, who has been charged with felony perjury and failure to report in connection to the Sandusky case, receives a monthly pension payment of nearly $28, 000. Schultz had actually retired from his post at the university in 2009, but returned this past September on an interim basis. He retired again after being charged.

The paper notes that it has submitted a request for information on former head coach Joe Paterno’s pension.
