If Penn State is interested in Rutgers coach Greg Schiano to replace long-time coach Joe Paterno, they can keep choppin’.
Schiano was a hot commodity about three to four years ago when jobs at Miami and Michigan opened up, but Schiano surprised many when he decided to stay at Rutgers and continue building what he started. Since then, Schiano’s name hasn’t been as sexy when it comes to coaching jobs that have opened up around college football. But, with the new opening at Penn State, Schiano’s name has once again made its way around the oddsmaker pool.
Whether or not Schiano is a serious candidate remains to be seen, but Schiano’s already taken the initiative to downplay the rumors.
“I’m only interested in one job and that’s the one I have right now,” Schiano told Bill King of 247Sports Radio.
You can’t always believe what coaches say -- actually, we rarely can -- but Schiano’s been loyal to Piscataway for this long. If we’re inclined to believe anybody at this point, it’s probably him.
And that’s why Penn State should want Schiano. Not only has he had success at a place that’s historically been a tough sell, but he’s stayed out of NCAA trouble and he graduates his players. Penn State should want a change from the current coaching staff, not from their core beliefs.
