Wisconsin DE likely to redshirt after nagging ankle injury

The foot injury to Wisconsin defensive end David Gilbert has taken longer than expected to heal, and it looks as though Gilbert’s going to call it a season and apply for a medical redshirt.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writes that Gilbert, who has missed the last six games with a broken bone in his foot, will apply for a medical waiver for this season.

It looks like he is probably going to redshirt,” defensive coordinator Chris Ash said Wednesday. “The longer we go that is probably the direction we want to go.”

Gilbert had hoped to be back from his injury for the Ohio State game, but it just hasn’t healed as quickly as he, or Wisconsin, hoped. The junior hasn’t redshirted so far, so if he’s granted the medical waiver by the NCAA, he’ll have two years remaining in Madison.

“We miss him,” Ash said. “He was coming on, doing some things that we don’t have right now, mostly in pass rush. The guys out there are there right now are doing their best but they are not David.”
