USF should get receiver back for WVU game

When X-rays revealed late last month that South Florida wide receiver Sterling Griffin had a fractured right ankle, it was believed that the sophomore would have to miss anywhere from six to eight weeks. Such a prognosis would indicate that Griffin’s season was over, but it looks like the team’s leading receiver may have a chance to play Thursday against West Virginia.

“We’re expecting Sterling to go this week,” receivers coach Phil McGeoghan said. “He’s practiced well. He’s running around out there. I’m expecting Sterling to be back. He’s excited about it.”

Having Griffin back will undoubtedly be a boost for USF, who’s trying to make a bowl game. Playing in Tampa has been a pain in the side for WVU the past few trips, and a short week coming off an emotional rivalry win over Pitt could spell trouble with what is surely going to be a determined Bulls team.

Griffin had 40 catches for 493 yards on the season before getting hurt against Cincinnati.
