Mizzou has Border War slot open for November; does KU want it?

As you’ve probably seen by now -- or, if you haven’t, HERE YA GO -- the SEC released its highly anticipated schedule for the 2012 football season.

For any Missouri fans, your schedule is going to look like the one below, courtesy of of the Kansas City Star:

Sept. 1 TBD (Non-conf.)
Sept. 8 Georgia
Sept. 15 Arizona State
Sept. 22 – at South Carolina
Sept. 29 - TBD (Non-conf.)
Oct. 6 - Vanderbilt
Oct. 13 - Alabama
Oct. 20 - BYE
Oct. 27 - Kentucky
Nov. 3 – at Florida
Nov. 10 – at Tennessee
Nov. 17 - TBD (Non-conf.)
Nov. 24 – at Texas A&M

As far as nonconference scheduling goes, the Sept. 15 date against ASU appears to be set, but three other non-con slots are still available for moving and shaking. The Tigers had previously agreed to play Southern Illinois (D1-AA) and Miami (OH) for the 2012 season, although the dates for those games are being worked out. That leaves one spot open for Kansas, which Mizzou would have played on Nov. 24; that spot has now been filled by Texas A&M.

However, there is an open date the week before on Nov. 17, and although the Big 12 schedules haven’t been released yet because of ongoing litigation between West Virginia and the Big East, it could be a workable slot for the Jayhawks.

That is, if they want to play Mizzou. KU has maintained that if Mizzou left the Big 12, which they did, that the Border War game would come to a halt.

Obviously, our intent as it has been all along, is to try to play that game,” said MU senior associate athletic director Mark Alnutt. “But we haven’t heard anything officially from them whether they would end this or want to continue it.”
