The new contract extension for Texas coach Mack Brown has been in the works for a month to the day, and yesterday, word came that the school’s Board of Regents would be voting on the length of Brown’s extension on Thursday.
In a surprise to absolutely no one, UT’s BOR voted unanimously to add four more years to Brown’s contract to take the long-time coach through 2020.
“We feel we have the best coach and staff and program in the country,” UT president Bill Powers said. “We want Mack Brown to be our coach for the long, long term.”
Although there was no pay increase as part of today’s meeting, Brown is set to get $100,000 annually as part of his old contract that originally took him 2016. Some of Brown’s assistants, however, seem to be in line for raises, according to Powers.
Those could be announced within the next week.
Additionally, Brown’s buyout is $3.5 million if he’s fired this year -- barring a winless season and a surprise NCAA investigation with Rachel McCoy playing weasel, that just isn’t happening -- and drops to $2 million if he’s terminated in 2017.
