As Ben touched upon Saturday morning, Northern Illinois announced Friday night that P.J. Fleck had left the program one day after being named the Huskies’ offensive coordinator.
The official reason from the school behind Fleck’s departure was, as head coach Dave Doeren put it, “he does not feel he’s ready to be an offensive coordinator.” Apparently, though, he feels like he’s ready to be an NFL assistant.
Citing a source close to the situation, the DeKalb Daily Chronicle has reported that Fleck left NIU to take the wide receivers job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The move will be a reunion for Fleck; the assistant was receivers coach the past two seasons at Rutgers on the coaching staff of Greg Schiano, who left the Scarlet Knights last month for the Bucs.
Fleck had played his college football for the Huskies and was an assistant with the football program for a couple of seasons late last decade.
NIU has not announced which direction they will now turn for a new coordinator to replace Matt Canada, who left for the same job at Wisconsin.
