Friday, Maryland was on the receiving end of a very positive decision from the top unsigned member of the Class of 2012.
This coming week, will they receive the same type of decision from the man who could be targeting wide receiver Stafon Diggs in 2012?
While speculation last week had Danny O’Brien informing head coach Randy Edsall that he was leaving the Terps program, the quarterback quickly took to Twitter to knock down rumors that a decision had been made. There is, though, still the chance that the junior-to-be could leave the program.
The Baltimore Sun reported Friday that news on O’Brien’s future at the school is expected to come down early next week. The paper writes that “O’Brien is still contemplating where he will play the remainder of his college football career.”
O’Brien is scheduled to graduate in the next couple of months, and could play immediately at another Div. 1-A (FBS) program
O’Brien was a freshman All-American and the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2010 under Ralph Friedgen, but lost his hold on the starting job midway through the 2011 season in Edsall’s first year with the Terps. Rumors of a transfer for O’Brien, who split time with C.J. Brown before suffering a season-ending injury, have been bubbling just below the surface since last October.
In addition to O’Brien, offensive lineman Max Garcia is rumored to be leaving the program as well. Garcia started all 12 games at left tackle for Maryland last season as a true sophomore. R.J. Dill, the starting right tackle every game last year, transferred after the 2011 season.
All told, at least eight Maryland players have left the Terps since November. Additionally, Edsall “parted ways” with both of his coordinators following a two-win debut season.
Besides all of that attrition and losing and stuff, everything is just fine in College Park, thank you very much.
