Oklahoma State plucks defensive assistant from Tulsa

With the departure of safeties coach and special teams coordinator Joe DeForest to West Virginia, Oklahoma State has been in the market for a defensive assistant for the past month.

That need was filled today with the news that Tulsa secondary coach Van Malone will likely be taking a similar job with the Cowboys. OSU has not confirmed the hire, but Malone told the Tulsa World via text message that he was switching jobs.

“(Coaching at OSU) is a great opportunity for me and my family,” Malone wrote. “The decision was tough because the Tulsa family meant so much to us.”

Malone spent the past two seasons at Tulsa after spending time with Texas A&M from 2006-09. It was during that time that Malone alleges Willie Lyles of Complete Scouting Services requested $80,000 for the playing services of Patrick Peterson. Malone says A&M did not pay for Peterson, who ultimately went to LSU, or any players.
