Garrett Gilbert gets another year of eligibility

Finally, some good news for one of the good guys in college football.

Former Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert has been approved for a NCAA injury waiver, Longhorns coach Mack Brown announced on Friday. The result of the decision means Gilbert, who is expected to finish his undergraduate program at UT this May, will be eligible for two more years at his new school, SMU.

Gilbert announced his decision to transfer to June Jones’ program back in November.

Gilbert was pulled as the Longhorns starter just two games into the 2011 season when it became clear the junior had made no progress from a disastrous 2010 campaign. Two weeks later, Gilbert underwent season-ending surgery for his right (throwing) shoulder.

With former SMU quarterback Kyle Padron moving on from the program, Gilbert will have an opportunity to compete right away for the starting job with the Mustangs. More importantly, Gilbert will get another shot at a collegiate career that, for one reason or another, just hasn’t worked out.
