Drug charges lead to ECU player’s suspension

After a brief respite, the ‘Days Without an Arrest” ticker is headed back toward its offseason normalcy of double zeroes.

In a press release, East Carolina announced Thursday evening that defensive tackle Terry Williams “has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities effective immediately.” Per the release, the move was the result of a drug-related arrest earlier this week.

“I have suspended Terry as a result of a poor decision and conduct that is certainly not in line with the standards we have in place at East Carolina,” head coach Ruffin McNeill said in a statement. “Representing this university and playing in our program is a privilege and everyone will be held accountable to earn that right. Naturally, I’m disappointed and frustrated by this development, but we will continue to mentor and guide our players to the best of our ability, although it isn’t always an exact process.”

Late Wednesday night, Williams was charged with possession of marijuana and intent to sell by the Simpson (N.C.) Police Department. No further details of what led to the arrest have been made available.

As a redshirt freshman last season, Williams played in 11 games. As noted in the release, Williams was projected to serve as a top reserve at nose tackle for the Pirates.
