UConn tabs transfer over incumbent as starting QB

With UConn set to commence the start of summer camp today, there will officially be a new face under center for the Huskies.

Head coach Paul Pasqualoni announced Thursday that transfer quarterback Chandler Whitmer will enter camp as the starter. Johnny McEntee -- he of the exquisite trick-shot video -- and Michael Nebrichare listed as the co-No. 2 QBs on the depth chart behind Whitmer.

McEntee (pictured) started all 12 games for the Huskies in 2011, throwing 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Whitmer originally signed with Illinois in 2010 and took a redshirt his true freshman season. He transferred to the JUCO ranks the following season, and transferred to UConn earlier this year.

The Newnan, Ga., product -- Noonan? -- participated in the Huskies’ practice sessions this past spring and apparently impressed the coaching staff enough to take the job away from the incumbent.

Whitmer was a four-star member of the Illini’s 2010 recruiting class, rated as the No. 19 pro-style QB according to Rivals.com.
