Good Luck: Stanford names its new starting QB

With Kellen Moore and Andrew Luck off to the money-green pastures of the NFL, Boise State and Stanford, respectively, have been charged with the highly unenviable proposition of replacing two of the most productive quarterbacks in the programs’ histories.

While the Broncos have yet to (officially) name a replacement, the Cardinal has officially taken the official plunge withe a new man under center.

At his press conference following Tuesday’s practice, second-year head coach David Shaw announced that junior Josh Nunes will be the man to follow Luck. Nunes beat out Brett Nottingham, the previous favorite for the job with perhaps the most Stanford-y name ever.

At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, Nunes looks every bit the part of a Luck successor, but has little experience. Nunes has played in four career games, his last action coming in 2010 when he completed 1 of 2 passes for seven yards against Wake Forest.

Nottingham had 78 yards passing and a touchdown last season.

With a new quarterback behind center, Shaw could rely even more heavily on the Cardinal’s run game centered around 1,000-yard rusher Stepfan Taylor. Stanford opens up the 2012 season against San Jose State.
