Updated: Notre Dame loses projected starting CB to Achilles injury

Notre Dame’s quest to get back to the BCS has reportedly taken a serious blow weeks before the start of the season.

Irish Illustrated first reported that projected starting cornerback Lo Wood suffered a season-ending Achilles injury on Monday. Coach Brian Kelly confirmed the injury Tuesday. Wood will undergo surgery on Wednesday and miss the 2012 season.

It’s a tough blow to an Irish cornerback unit that doesn’t have a ton of experience (more on what that means for Notre Dame HERE).

Wood appeared in 10 games last year, but only recorded six total tackles. However, he did get plenty of snaps during preseason practice.

There’s simply no way to overemphasize how tough of a loss this is for Notre Dame’s defense.
