Purdue senior linebacker Dwayne Beckford‘s first dismissal from the team late last year lasted a matter of months.
It’s safe to bet his second dismissal will be more permanent.
Two days after he was indefinitely suspended for violating his probation -- Beckford was arrested Monday and charged with two counts of possession of paraphernalia and one count of possession of a synthetic drug -- coach Danny Hope announced Wednesday that Beckford had been removed from the team.
Beckford was initially dismissed following a drunk-driving arrest last December, but was reinstated by Hope in May.
At his late-July sentencing on the OVI charge, Beckford was given 30 days of community corrections and 335 days of probation in which he was forced to blow into a tube in order to start his vehicle. The West Lafayette Journal and Courier added that “[w]hile on probation, [Beckford] cannot consume alcohol or drugs and cannot go into any bars, taverns or liquor stores.”
However, Monday’s arrest was the fourth one for Beckford since June of 2011.
Beckford’s absence will be notable. He ranked second on the team in tackles last year with 91 and was projected to be a starter for Purdue this year.
