We’re only one week into the college football season and already Florida State has reportedly suffered a tough break along what’s projected to be a stout defensive line.
Bruce Feldman of CBSSports first reported Monday evening that Brandon Jenkins, a two-time All-ACC selection, will miss the rest of the 2012 season because of a left foot injury. The Tallahassee Democrat was later able to confirm the injury. Jenkins, a senior, was injured during a 69-3 win over Murray State.
FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said after Saturday’s game that the X-rays on his foot were negative, but Jenkins was set for an MRI Monday afternoon. Since Jenkins has not used a redshirt yet, he would be eligible for one if he decides to come back next season.
There’s no denying the loss -- Jenkins recorded 41 tackles and eight sacks last season -- but the Seminoles are deep along the defensive line. Bjoern Werner, Tank Carradine, Giorgio Newberry and Mario Edwards are all players who can pick up the slack. Edwards was apparently going to redshirt this season, but obviously this latest set of events could change that.
Updated 11:17 p.m. ET: Florida State has confirmed that Jenkins will miss the season with a foot injury. Below is a statement from Fisher.
“After receiving information late in the afternoon following an MRI and a weight bearing X-Ray and also awaiting to talk to Brandon Jenkins and his mother, it was determined that Brandon will miss the 2012 season with a Lisfranc injury. Brandon is not only a tremendous player, but a great person, teammate and leader that we will miss. I know he’ll bounce back and recover to continue a great career.”
