You’d think after his third ACL tear that Purdue quarterback Robert Marve would have to finally hang up the cleats for good.
Not so.
Despite suffering another ligament tear earlier this season, Boilermakers coach Danny Hope sounded optimistic that the injury was less severe and that Marve, a sixth-year senior, could return later this year.
“We have our fingers crossed it’s not as serious as it has been in the past and he can still come back and play this season,” Hope said.
That may come to fruition after all. On his weekly teleconference, Hope said there is a chance that Marve could play this week against Michigan.
“There’s a chance that Robert could play this week. He hasn’t had many practice reps since he had his latest (knee) injury. It was about three weeks ago, he has been able to pitch and catch a little bit in practice, but he hasn’t had many team reps.
“I think that he feels good enough now, physically, to be in position to contribute throughout the course of the ballgame.”
If Marve is able to come back, there’s not much else to say but “wow.” Luck has not been Marve’s side when it comes to injuries and ACL tears are almost always season-ending. The fact that Marve would come back at all, let alone this soon, is remarkable.
Marve started the Boilermakers’ season opener against Eastern Kentucky, but split time with Caleb TerBush.
