Manziel leapfrogs Klein as Heisman betting favorite

In the line of succession for 2012 Heisman front-runners, preseason favorite Matt Barkley begat early-season pick Geno Smith, who begat midseason fave Collin Klein.

With the finish line for another regular season fast approaching, and thanks to the on-field failings of the aforementioned players, the gambling types have turned their attention to yet another apple of their eye to hoist the stiff-armed trophy next month.

In the latest set of odds released by Bovada.com, the oddsmaking website has pegged Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel as a 2/5 favorite to be named the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner. In the most recent odds release less than a week ago, and prior to Kansas State’s implosion against Baylor, Klein had been the favorite at 2/3 followed by Manziel at 3/1.

Klein is currently at 5/2 according to Bovada.

Should Manziel continue on his current trajectory as the favorite, he would become the first freshman, redshirt or otherwise, to take home the award.

The only players currently listed by this particular website are Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o (4/1) and Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller (20/1).
