Arizona RB sets single-season school rushing record in loss to ASU

Rich Rodriguez has never had the personnel in his first year at a job that matches his playbook quite like he’s had at Arizona this year with quarterback Matt Scott and running back Ka’Deem Carey. Last night, Carey showed why he’s among the best running backs in the country in a 41-34 loss to Arizona State.

The sophomore rushed for 172 yards and a touchdown last night, giving him 1,757 yards on the season. That’s good enough to keep him as Division 1-A’s leading rusher with the final weeks of the college football season coming to an end. Carey also broke Trung Canidate‘s previous school record of 1,602 rushing yards in a single season.

Yet, somehow, Carey is not among the finalists for the Doak Walker Award this year. Carey appeared to be hampered with an injury in the second half of the game and his status for Arizona’s bowl game is unclear.

Interestingly enough, though, it could be a quarterback, not a running back, that could pass Carey as the leading rusher in major college football this season. Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch has 1,611 yards rushing with the MAC championship game against Kent State upcoming.
