Assault charge led to Pitt player’s dismissal

And now we know the rest of the story.

Monday, Pittsburgh confirmed that defensive back Steve Williams had been dismissed from the football program for violating unspecified team rules. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Williams was arrested Saturday following an incident that involved assaulting a woman who may or may not have been his girlfriend.

An unidentified woman claiming to be Williams’ girlfriend alleged that the player had assaulted her at his apartment. The Post-Gazette wrote that "[a]ccording to criminal complaint University of Pittsburgh police filed, the woman had marks on the right side of her chest and was holding strands of her hair.”

Williams denied that the alleged victim was his girlfriend. He was charged with one count of simple assault.

After redshirting as a true freshman last season, Williams had not played in any games in 2012.
