Prior to the start of the 2012 season, Bill Curry announced that he would be both stepping down as Georgia State’s head coach and retiring from coaching period at the end of the football year.
Three months after that announcement, and ahead of the Panthers’ move to the FBS level, GSU has found themselves a successor.
The school announced Friday that Trent Miles has been hired as the football program’s new coach. Miles comes to the Atlanta school after spending the past five seasons as head coach at Indiana State.
“I am extremely honored and excited to be the new head football coach at Georgia State University,” said Miles. “We are committed to building this program into one that competes for championships on the field and in the classroom. We will strive to represent our student body, alumni and the state of Georgia with character and integrity.”
After just one win total in his first two seasons with the Sycamores, Miles won 19 games his last three seasons at the FCS school. Miles has also been an assistant at FBS programs such as Washington (2005-07), Notre Dame (2002-04) and Stanford (2001).
Now, he will be charged with leading Georgia State, which won just one game this past season, into the Sun Belt Conference in 2013.
“As Georgia State Football enters its next chapter with the move... we need a program-builder, and that’s exactly what we have in Trent Miles,” said GSU athletic director Cheryl Levick. “He is a dynamic leader, a tireless recruiter, and a talented coach who will take this program to the next level.
“Through Trent’s leadership and hard work, he turned the Indiana State football program into a winner, and he will do the same for Georgia State.”
