LSU suspends Brad Wing for bowl game

Brad Wing missed LSU’s season opener due to an injury issue. As it turns out, the talented punter from Australia will bookend the season with another “did not play,” albeit for an entirely different reason.

According to Jim Kleinpeter of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, and citing a source close to the situation, Wing has been suspended for the Tigers’ Chick-fil-A Bowl matchup with Clemson New Year’s Eve. No reason for the suspension was given or even hinted at.

The school has yet to confirm Wing’s status for the bowl game. Head coach Les Miles is not scheduled to meet with the media again until Friday, after the team has arrived in Atlanta to begin on-site bowl prep.

If the report comes to fruition, it’s a serious blow to an LSU squad used to Wing’s powerful left leg significantly shifting field position in its favor. Wing is currently 12th in the nation with an average of 44.8 yards per punt, one year after he finished 11th at 44.4 yards per punt.

Wing would be replaced by fellow Aussie Jaime Keehn, who handled the punting duties in the opener and averaged 41 yards on his three punts.

UPDATED 12:12 p.m. ET: In a press release, Miles announced that Wing has indeed been suspended for LSU’s bowl game for “violation of team rules.” No further explanation was given.
