Houston’s leading rusher to bypass chance at the NFL as well

Since everyone seemed to be bypassing the 2013 NFL draft on Monday, why not add another player to that list?

In a release from the school, Houston running back Charles Sims announced he would be returning to the Cougars in 2013 in a move that will surely excite coach Tony Levine and the school’s fan base.

“The NFL is my ultimate goal and will still be my goal when I finish at Houston. My family and I sat down and carefully evaluated all aspects of the decision and in the end the opportunity for one more year at Houston was the decision we felt strongly about,” said Sims. “I enjoy begin here and enjoy being around my teammates. We have a number of players returning on offense so I’m excited for next year and the future of the Houston football program.”

Despite nagging injuries that cost him three games this year, Sims still finished the 2012 season with 851 yards with 11 touchdowns and an average of six yards per carry. Sims is also a good receiver out of the backfield, leading all active NCAA running backs with 158 career receptions.

“We are excited that Charles has decided to return for his senior season. He is a valued member of our program, not just as a player but as a person,” Cougars head coach Tony Levine said. “Charles is a great role model and displays great character. As a football player, he is what’s exciting about college football and will continue to be so in the future in his main contributor role. I am excited with the type of offense we will display in 2013 with Charles leading the way.”
