The revamping of Bob Stoops’ Oklahoma coaching staff continues, with a former SEC assistant the latest to join the Sooners.
Jay Boulware, who spent the past four seasons at Auburn, has been hired as OU’s new tight ends coach, the school announced Friday evening. In addition to the positional responsibility, Boulware will also, the release states, have special teams duties to be further defined at a later date.
In January, Boulware was hired by Wisconsin as TEs coach as well as special teams coordinator.
“Jay owns an impressive track record as both a coach and recruiter,” Stoops said in a statement. “He possesses a wide range of coaching experience, competing in some of the nation’s toughest conferences. He also has strong ties in the state of Texas, as well as recruiting relationships across the country that will serve us well at the University of Oklahoma. We enthusiastically welcome Jay back to his roots in the Big 12.”
Those strong ties to the state of Texas to which Stoops referred began in the early nineties, with Boulware, a native of Oklahoma City, playing his college ball at Texas. He also served as a student/grad assistant with the Longhorns (1994-96).
Boulware has Big 12 experience as well as a position coach, spending two seasons (2007-08) as the special teams coordinator/running backs coach at Iowa State.
Additionally, he spent three years as tight ends coach (2001), running backs coach (2002) and running backs coach/special teams coordinator (2003) at Arizona; one year (2004) as running backs coach at Stanford; and two seasons (2005-06) as tight ends coach/co-special teams coordinator at Utah.
Gary Andersen was on that same Utes staff, and hired Boulware to be a part of his first Badgers coaching staff less than two months ago
