QB Bridgford leaves Cal team, future up in the air

Whether or not Allan Bridgford will be a part of the quarterback equation at Cal will likely be determined at some point over the next couple of days.

The senior quarterback, first-year head coach Sonny Dykes acknowledged Wednesday, has left the team to ponder his future with the football program. Bridgford left to discuss the situation with his family after being informed by the coaching staff that he would see his practice time reduced this spring.

“He kind of got some news from us that he was going to get some reduced reps,” Dykes told reporters following practice. “Decided he’s going to take a day or two to kind of assess things.”

Dykes did allow that Bridgford would be welcomed back with open arms if, after a couple of days of soul-searching, he decided to return.

Zach Kline, a four-star member of Cal’s 2012 recruiting class who took a redshirt as a true freshman, entered spring as the favorite to replace Zach Maynard as the starter. True freshman Jared Goff (four-star member of this year’s recruiting class) and redshirt junior Austin Hinder are also eating up reps that otherwise might have gone to Bridgford.

Last season, Bridgford started three games, completing less than 46 percent of his passes for 277 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. He’s the only QB on the Cal roster who’s thrown a pass at the FBS level.
