Two years ago, Delvon Simmons nearly signed with USC before inking with North Carolina.
A couple of weeks after leaving Texas Tech, Simmons has apparently landed in the spot most recruitniks thought he’d be in the first place.
Via Twitter and by way of USCFootball.com Wednesday afternoon, the defensive tackle announced that, yes, he will be transferring to USC. The lineman visited the Trojans the weekend after his mid-May departure from the Red Raiders, and the Pac-12 program has long been considered the front-runner for his services. There has been no confirmation from USC on the addition of Simmons.
Simmons also visited Miami shortly after his USC trip, and his name was connected to a pair of home-state schools as well -- Penn State and Pittsburgh.
Joining the Trojans continues what’s been an abnormal football odyssey for the player.
A little over a month after signing on as a member of North Carolina’s 2011 recruiting class, Delvon Simmons was released from his Tar Heels scholarship and ultimately landed at Texas Tech. In May, it was reported that he was leaving the Red Raiders as well.
For the 2011 recruiting class, Simmons was a four-star recruit rated as the No. 1 player in the state of Pennsylvania; the No. 5 defensive tackle in the country; and the No. 80 player at any position in the country. He started all 13 games for the Red Raiders in 2012 after playing in 10 games as a true freshman in 2011.
Because of NCAA transfer rules, Simmons will be forced to sit out the 2013 season but will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2014.
