Early UGA enrollee reportedly suffers ACL injury

Expected to play a significant role in Georgia’s defense from the start, Reggie Wilkinson will instead be facing a heavy dose of rehab, apparently.

As relayed by Seth Emerson of the Macon Telegraph, the cornerback suffered what’s reportedly a significant and potentially season-ending knee injury. There was no word on how Wilkinson suffered the injury, although one report states that it occurred during offseason workouts with the team.

While UGA has yet to publicly address the health issue, a tweet from the defensive back seems to indicate that he may have suffered an injury to his ACL.

“Minor setback for a major comeback. #RG3 type-ish,” the tweet read, referring to former Baylor and current Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, who suffered a torn ACL and LCL last December.

Additionally, one of Wilkinson’s teammates, wide receiver Michael Bennett, confirmed the worst on his Twitter account.

“Y’all pray for @ReggieWilkerson as he goes into ACL surgery tomorrow,” the receiver tweeted Thursday evening. “You gonna come back stronger than ever my man!”

Again, there’s been no official word from the university.

Wilkinson was an early enrollee as part of the Bulldogs’ 2013 recruiting class and participated in spring practice. With starting defensive back Josh Harvey-Clemons set to serve a one-game suspension, the Telegraph writes, “Wilkinson was a prime candidate to start at the nickel-back role, a critical spot against Clemson.”
