Last week’s indefinite suspension of Mississippi State linebacker Chris Hughes now has some context.
Per multiple outlets, Hughes was arrested last month on domestic violence-related charges -- his third such arrest in two years and fifth total arrest for a misdemeanor violent crime.
Hughes was arrested on May 24 in his hometown of Mobile, Ala., on charges of third degree assault and third degree domestic violence for allegedly striking his girlfriend multiple times in the face. His is still currently in Mobile County jail awaiting his July 10 court date.
MSU officials confirmed to The Dispatch Thursday evening that Hughes has been let go from the team. This latest suspension was Hughes’ third since joining the Bulldogs. He was suspended once in 2011 for a second arrest on domestic violence charges that resulted in jail time and him missing the season opener against Memphis. He was also sidelined for one game in 2010 for a helmet-to-helmet hit
Hughes had 31 tackles in 2012 as a backup linebacker.
