Ex-FAU QB, likely Owl grad assistant hit with drunk-driving charge

Coming off a 2012 season in which he threw for nearly 3,000 yards as FAU’s starting quarterback in his final season of eligibility, Graham Wilbert was in line for a grad assistant position on first-year head coach Carl Pelini‘s Owl staff.

Based on an incident over the weekend, that position may or may not still be available.

According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Wilbert was arrested very early Sunday morning on suspicion of what was described by the paper as “driving under the influence of an unlawfully high blood-alcohol level.” Just what that unlawfully high BAC was is not known.

What is known, though, is that Wilbert was booked into jail by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department at 4:47 a.m. local time and released less than five hours later. What’s also known is that FAU officials who will determine the former player’s future with the program are aware of the drunk-driving arrest as well.

“We have been made aware of an incident involving Graham Wilbert. We have a standard of conduct for our coaches and staff that he failed to adhere. His arrest is very disappointing,” FAU athletic director Pat Chun said in a statement. “This is a matter we take with great seriousness. This type of behavior puts innocent people at risk. Graham will be responsible for his actions with both the legal system as well as internal ramifications that will be determined by myself and Carl Pelini.”

Wilbert had been offered a grad assistant position by Pelini, and had been working with the Owls throughout the summer. The Sun Sentinel writes that “Wilbert was awaiting admittance into his graduate degree program before he becomes an official member of the coaching staff.”
