Miami leads Florida after physical first half

The Michigan vs. Notre Dame seems to have gotten all of the attention this week, but Miami and Florida has made for quite an entertaining first half in another rivalry game that shows no signs of continuing any time soon. Miami holds a 14-6 lead at the half after coming up with a fumble recovery as Florida was looking to score late in the half. Red zone failure has been the story of the first half for Florida.

Miami quarterback Stephen Morris has thrown two touchdown passes against the Gators, including a 52-yard connection with Phillip Dorsett to complete an 84-yard drive. Morris has had a couple throws that have left Hurricane fans scratching their heads as well.

Florida got on the board with a nice handoff fake by Jeff Driskel allowing him to run nearly uncontested to the right side for a touchdown. But Florida attempted one of those funky point-after formations that looks like a fake two-point conversion going in to an extra point, but the Gators actually did try for the two-point conversion only to come up short. Will that point come back to haunt Florida?

Coming in to the game it was expected to be a big day for Miami running back Duke Johnson. At the half, Johnson has rushed for 43 yards on eight carries against the Florida defense.

It has only been one half, but Miami is certainly off to a fine start this season after an impressive first half against the Gators and their dominance shown in week one against hapless Florida Atlantic. Are the Hurricanes also making a statement to the rest of the ACC in the process? Clemson scored a huge win for the conference last week with a home win against Georgia, and now Miami seems to be doing a solid job at following that up.

Let’s see if The U can finish off Florida or not in the second half before getting carried away. This is a big test for the program.
