Nevada ‘hopeful’ Cody Fajardo will return for MWC opener

The availability of one of the Mountain West Conference remains up in the air. although his status is decidedly less pessimistic than it was a week ago at this time.

Speaking to a group of fans at a luncheon Monday, Nevada head coach Brian Polian sounded somewhat optimistic that Cody Fajardo would be healthy enough to play Saturday in the conference opener against Hawaii. Fajardo suffered a sprained right knee in a Week 2 win over Cal-Davis and did not play in the 55-point loss to Florida State this past weekend.

Polian told the crowd he’s “hopeful” Fajardo will be ready to play, but added that he “can’t guarantee you that.”

Fajardo was a second-team All-MWC selection in his second season as a starter. He accounted for 32 touchdowns in 2012, 20 passing and 12 rushing.

The knee issue with Fajardo is not the only one facing the Wolf Pack at the position. Backup Devin Combs, who started in place of Fajardo against the Seminoles, injured his knee in the loss and has already been ruled out of the Hawaii game. Redshirt freshman Tyler Stewart would get the start if neither Fajardo nor Combs are available, with true freshman Dante Mayes serving as the No. 2 quarterback.
