Colorado to play Charleston Southern in flood makeup game

Colorado has found an opponent to replace its Sept. 14 game with Fresno State that was postponed due to heavy rain and flooding in the Boulder area, the school announced on Monday.

The Buffaloes will play Charleston Southern from the FCS ranks at Folsom Field on Oct. 19. No kickoff time has been set yet.

Colorado athletic director Rick George said he wasn’t able to come to a deal with Fresno State on a makeup game.

Colorado and Fresno State couldn’t reach reach a deal for a makeup game in 2013 and the future of the series will be discussed, George said. The 2-for-1 series (two in Boulder, one in Fresno) as the featured the Buffaloes playing on the road at Fresno last year and the two are scheduled to meet in Boulder on Sept. 14, 2019.

George said he contacted over three dozen schools over past few weeks in an attempt to fill his schedule, but to no avail.

This could actually end up working out for the Buffs. While a bowl berth seems remote, a win over Charleston Southern will count toward bowl eligibility.

Colorado received a waiver from the NCAA for it to be bowl eligible if it gets to six wins this season but if two were to come against FCS teams. Under the current rules, schools are allowed one win over an FCS opponent to count toward the minimum six required for postseason eligibility; the Buffaloes already had played an FCS school, Central Arkansas, winning that game 38-24 back on Sept. 7.

With a little more luck, Colorado could get to five wins for the first time since 2010.
