ACC again sweeps weekly Camp honors

For the second time this season, a pair of players from the ACC have claimed national weekly honors.

Boston College running back Andre Williams and North Carolina defensive end Kareem Martin, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced, have been named the National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for their performances in Week 12.

In BC’s win over North Carolina State Saturday, Williams ran for 339 yards on 42 carries. The total is the most ever in ACC history and breaks the school record of 295 yards Williams set a week ago. His 634 yards the past two weeks is second in FBS history in back-to-back games, surpassed only by Texas’ Ricky Williams‘ 668 in 1998.

In the process, Williams broke BC’s single-season rushing record of 1,726 yards set by Mike Cloud in 1998. Williams, who leads the nation in rushing, now has 1,810 yards on the season, and has two regular season games plus a bowl game to pad his record.

Martin, on the other hand, was a stat-stuffing force in UNC’s win over Pittsburgh. All told, Martin was credited with eight tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. The performance pushed Martin to tied for 12th in the country and fifth in the ACC in sacks.

Martin becomes just the second Tar Heel to earn weekly Camp honors, joining defensive back Kendric Burney in November of 2009.

Following Week 4, players from ACC members Pittsburgh and Maryland claimed the weekly Camp honors. Williams and Martin were the eight and ninth ACC players who have been honored this season, easily the most of any conference. The SEC (four), Big Ten (three) and Mountain West (two) are the only other league with more than one Camp Player of the Week.
