UGA confirms torn ACL for Aaron Murray

UPDATED 11:24 a.m. ET: Georgia confirmed very late Sunday morning that Aaron Murray has indeed suffered a torn ACL. Because swelling in the knee was minimal, Murray will undergo surgery this week as opposed to waiting the normal 10-14 days.

Needless to say, Murray’s season and collegiate career have come to an end.

Pardon my French, but dammit all.

Unfortunately, the rumors and speculation that have been swirling around the seriousness of the injury suffered by good-guy Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray Saturday night appear to be painfully true. Tweets surfaced from numerous Georgia beat writers late Sunday morning that Murray’s mom had taken to social media to announce that her son suffered a torn ACL in the win over Kentucky and will undergo surgery early this coming week to repair the damage.

While Murray did not confirm his mother’s “report,” he did intimate on Twitter that the injury he suffered late in the first half was at least mildly serious.

As of yet, UGA has not confirmed the extent of Murray’s injury. If it is indeed an ACL, it would mark the end of a prolific and record-breaking career for Murray between the hedges.

The senior holds nearly every major Bulldog single-season and career passing marks as well of a handful of SEC records. He was also the proverbial Iron Man, starting each of the past 52 games at quarterback for UGA. Provided the speculation is accurate, that streak will come to an end and put Hutson Mason under center for the regular-season finale against Georgia Tech and the team’s bowl game.

Mason would become the first player not named “Aaron Murray” to start at quarterback for the Bulldogs since the Dec. 28, 2009, Independence Bowl (Joe Cox).
