At every turn over the past couple of months, Nick Saban has attempted to smack down the rumors connecting him to a potential opening at Texas even as it was his agent that sent the rumor mill machine into overdrive.
Now, it’s the Alabama head coach’s better half’s turn to address the speculation, although she does put an interesting twist on the situation.
In a rather extensive and really well-done piece appearing in the Wall Street Journal, Terry Saban addressed what had been rampant speculation regarding her husband and the UT job, as well as rumors that had her house hunting in Austin a couple of months ago -- “rumors with absolutely no foundation” -- that simply added another layer to the “situation.” Just as her husband had previously, and just as emphatically, the woman referred to as “Miss Terry” stated in no uncertain terms that the Crimson Tide will be their final coaching destination.
“We have decided: this is where we are going to end our career,” Mrs. Saban told the WSJ’s Sharon Terlep. “We’re staying. We’re not going anywhere.”
That’s all well and good, but Terry Saban did add something, well, a little bit curious into the mix.
Her husband’s Tide is in the midst of a historic run, having won three of the last four BCS titles and are in a position to claim an unprecedented third straight BCS championship. According to Miss Terry, that success has spoiled a certain segment of the fan base and led to what she perceives as a lack of appreciation.
“You come to a crossroads and the expectations get so great, people get spoiled by success and there gets to be a lack of appreciation,” Mrs. Saban said. “We’re kind of there now. ...
“We are trying to educate ourselves, to change ourselves. We can’t change expectations or change lack of appreciation. We have to change our mind-set.”
And there it is. Conspiracy theorists just received a plethora of ammunition to load onto their black helicopters.
