Earlier this week, one of the worst teams at the FBS level with one of the worst defenses demoted its coordinator. Friday, a program with similar 2013 defensive lowlights took it a step further.
Indiana confirmed in a press release early this afternoon that head coach Kevin Wilson has dismissed defensive coordinator Doug Mallory. Along with Mallory, defensive line coach Jon Fabris “will not return to the coaching staff for the 2014 season,” the release stated.
“Doug and Jon are solid coaches and good men,” Wilson said in a statement. “We appreciate everything they have done for IU Football and wish them both the very best moving forward. We are excited about the future as we continue to build our program in a positive way.”
Mallory, who also held the titles of assistant head coach and safeties coach, recently completed his third season with the Hoosiers, while Fabris finished his second. Mallory is also the son of Bill Mallory, the winningest head coach in the history of IU football
In 2013, the Hoosiers were 114th in scoring defense, 120th in total defense, 115th in run defense and 118th in pass defense. Wilson will be entering his fourth season at IU, and must find away to turn around the defensive side of the ball if he wants to make it to a fifth year.
