Just a few day after it had abruptly found itself searching for a new head coach, it appears UAB has zeroed in on a replacement.
FootballScoop.com is reporting Monday morning that "[s]ources tell us Jacksonville State head coach Bill Clark is expected to accept the head coaching job at UAB.” The website cautions that no formal offer has been made to Clark.
Late last week, Clark attempted to downplay the speculation connecting him to the UAB job.“I don’t have anything to say about it,” he said. “I’ve had a hundred calls because somebody put something on a message board. Everything is going great here. We’re working our butts off.
“It’s flattering people think about us … for doing a good job … but I don’t know anything but what we’re doing here – and from our standpoint it couldn’t be going any better.”
Clark would replace Garrick McGee, who resigned after two seasons last week and accepted the offensive coordinator job under Bobby Petrino at Louisville.
Clark was hired by the Gamecocks in December of 2012, with 2013 serving as his first year as a head coach at the collegiate level. The Gamecocks were 11-4 this season -- they were 6-5 the year before Clark’s arrival -- and qualified for the FCS playoffs, losing to Eastern Washington in the quarterfinal round.
The past two seasons under McGee, UAB went 5-19.
