Injury rehab expected to keep Duke Johnson out of spring practice

A nasty leg injury suffered in the fall will very likely sideline Duke Johnson for the spring as well.

The talented running back broke his ankle in the third quarter of the Nov. 2 loss to eventual BCS champion Florida State, missing the remainder of the 2013 season. Asked by the Miami Herald over the weekend about his availability for spring practice in a couple of months, the sophomore didn’t sound terribly optimistic. In fact, he sounded downright pessimistic.

I don’t believe I will,” Johnson told the Herald when asked if he’d be healthy enough to participate. “But if anything changes, you’ll see. But I don’t really think so.”

Johnson is expected to be available for and fully participating in the “voluntary” summer workouts.

Despite missing five full games because of the injury, Johnson’s 920 yards rushing was easily tops on the team.
