About-face: Mark Beard won’t transfer from UGA after all

Thursday evening, Georgia sent out a press release confirming that, after he graduated, Mark Beard would be transferring out of the football program.

A little over 12 hours later? Forget about it. Pretend like it never happened.

In yet another release sent out Friday morning, UGA confirmed that the offensive lineman has changed his mind and will remain with the Bulldogs. The release stated that, after giving it some thought, Beard asked to return to the Bulldog team.

In a statement confirming Beard will remain in Athens, head coach Mark Richt said he could relate to what the tackle was going through and welcomed the player back.

“Sometimes making a decision and living it out are two different things,” Richt said. “As I’ve mentioned before the same thing happened to me. As a player I told my coach I had decided to leave for what I thought were all the right reasons. But after a few days, I realized it was a bad decision and asked to come back. He took me back and I’m happy Mark will still be a part of the program.”

In his two seasons at UGA, Beard has started two of the 26 games in which he’s played.
