Report: Four-star 2014 Gamecock signee off to JUCO ranks

On National Signing Day earlier this month, Dante Sawyer put his Herbie Hancock on a National Letter of Intent with the intention of beginning his collegiate playing career at South Carolina. Two weeks later? Hold that thought until 2015.

Citing unnamed sources, BigSpur.com reported Thursday morning that Sawyer will spend the 2014 season at East Mississippi Junior College in Scooba, Miss. Sawyer, who recently received his GED the 247Sports.com site noted, is traveling to the school today, presumably to enroll in classes.

The website went on to write that the defensive end “is expected to enroll at South Carolina in the spring of 2015 and will have four years to play three for the Gamecocks.”

The Suwanee, Ga., product was rated as the No. 7 strongside end in the country by Rivals.com in the Class of 2014. Along with linebacker Bryson Allen-Williams, Sawyer was the highest-rated member of the Gamecocks’ 2014 recruiting class on either side of the ball.

Sawyer signed with South Carolina over, among others, Auburn, Missouri and Tennessee.
