Rutgers dismisses QB Philip Nelson after assault charges

Rutgers coach Kyle Flood announced Tuesday quarterback Philip Nelson has been dismissed from the program following an alleged assault that left a man in critical condition over the weekend.

“The Rutgers football family’s thoughts and prayers are with Isaac Kolstad and his family,” coach Kyle Flood said in a statement released Tuesday morning.

Nelson, who transferred from Minnesota to Rutgers and would’ve been eligible for the Scarlet Knights in 2015, was charged with assault after allegedly kicking Isaac Kolstad, a former D-II football player, in the head during an altercation early Sunday morning in Mankato, Minn. According to his family, Kolstad suffered permanent brain damage and is “fighting for his life.”

In two years with Minnesota, the 20-year-old Nelson completed about 50 percent of his passes for 2,179 yards with 17 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
