Michigan officially adds USC-transfer RB

It has been expected to be all but a formality for a while now, but Michigan finally confirmed the addition of USC running back transfer Ty Isaac.

“We’re excited that Ty has decided to join the Michigan Football family,” said Michigan head coach Brady Hoke in a statement. “I know it was important for him to get back to the Midwest to be closer to his mom and family, so I think it’s a great fit for everyone. Ty’s a big back with really good speed and catches the ball extremely well out of the backfield. He certainly adds depth and competition to a position we feel very confident about.”

Isaac made the decision to transfer in May and the Big Ten always seemed to the be the most likely destination. After making visits to Illinois and Michigan, Isaac made his choice and could become a key ingredient in what could be a strong running game in Ann Arbor.

Michigan made no mention of when Isaac will be eligible to play for the Wolverines, and his eligibility has been a key part of the story. Wanting to be closer to his family and ill mother was a primary reason for wanting to transfer, but Michigan falls outside of the usual limit for what the NCAA would consider for a hardship waiver. If a waiver is approved, Isaac will be eligible to play this fall, but that may be a slim chance if one exists at all. The more likely scenario will see Isaac eligible to play football for Michigan starting in 2015.
